Does this item have a gel pack for putting in the freezer that will stay cold for extended periods?
This item is a grain-based item, not gel. The entire wrap gets placed in the freezer for up to 8 hours before using it.

Why is it necessary to put Bed Buddy in a plastic bag before putting it in the freezer?
Nothing with its ability to freeze. The outside is a soft material. You don't want stains, or odors, working into the cloth. Also, if there is any moisture at all, it could become frozen to the freezer.
